Our commentary articulates some of the commonalities between Baumeister et al.'s theory of socially differentiated roles and Strategic Differentiation-Integration Effort. We expand upon the target article's position by arguing that differentiating social roles is contextual and driven by varying ecological pressures, producing character displacement not only among individuals within complex societies, but also across social systems and multiple levels of organization.

En el transcurso del siglo XIX, la Ciudad de México fue escenario de numerosos combates en el contexto de guerras civiles e intervenciones extranjeras. Su papel como centro político del país ocasionó que los ejércitos advenedizos buscaran consolidar su triunfo de manera simbólica con su ocupación. No obstante, fue también epicentro de varios movimientos militares, uno de ellos el que inició el 11 de enero de 1858 que detonó la Guerra de Reforma. Entre esta fecha y el 21 del mismo (...) mes, la capital se convirtió en una "ciudad de guerra", lo que cambió las dinámicas de sus habitantes y las autoridades. Se analizan las modificaciones de las actividades cotidianas, el impacto social de la conflagración y el papel que representó el ejército en este movimiento, que formó parte de la construcción y consolidación de Estado mexicano. Transcending reviewed proximate theories, Van Lange et al.'s CLASH model attempts to ultimately explain the poleward declension of aggression and violence. Seasonal cold is causal, but, we contend, principally as an ecologically relevant evolutionary pressure. We further argue that futurity and restraint are life history variables, and that Life History Theory evolutionarily explains the biogeography of aggression and violence as strategic adaptation.

This study examines the methods students use to cheat on class examinations and suggests ways of deterring using an international sample from Australia, China, Ireland, and the United States. We also examine the level of cheating and reasons for cheating that prior research has highlighted as a method of demonstrating that our sample is equivalent to those in prior studies. Our results confirm the results of prior research that primarily employs students from the United States. The data indicate that actions (...) such as having multiple versions of the examination and scrambling the questions on these versions would deter cheating. In addition, given the increased level of cheating and students' increased perception of the social acceptability of cheating in college, the data provided by our international sample also suggest that some relatively simple precautions by instructors could dramatically reduce the level of cheating on in-class examinations. Feminist scholarship has advanced our understanding of the family's relationship to the economy and the state over different historical periods. Theorizing about gender, class, and family life has led us to conclude that global explanations of the family are false. Our knowledge about the meaning of racial stratification for family life, however, still remains fragmented. This article asks, What does including race have to offer the study of the family? Analysis of two streams of revisionist family scholarship demonstrates the need (...) for reconceptualizing racial diversity in a way that embraces the experiences of White families as well as racial ethnic families. Family upheavals created by industrialization and deindustrialization offer concrete examples of the importance of race in theorizing family life throughout American society. (shrink)

Despite the considerable body of scholarship and practice on interconnected systems of dominance and its effects on women in different social locations, Chicanas remain “outside the frame” of mainstream academic feminist dialogues. This article provides an overview of the contributions of Chicana intersectional thought, research, and activism. We highlight four major scholarly areas of contribution: borders, identities, institutional inequalities, and praxis. Although not a full mapping of the Chicana/latina presence in intersectionality, it proffers the distinctive features and themes defining the (...) intersectional terrain of Chicana feminism. Over the past two years, the College of Business (COB) profiled in this article spent time reflecting on where it had been, what it was doing, and where it needed to go in terms of teaching ethics. Based on this analysis, the COB developed an initiative to teach ethics to students, faculty, business people, government employees and officials, and others across its state so all of key stakeholder groups would have a greater appreciation for the benefits of ethical decision-making, the (...) need to exhibit ethical leadership, and the role that business and the free enterprise system can play in promoting the need to earn one’s reputation by doing the right thing. This paper presents the results of a national study of the beliefs and perceptions of small business professionals concerning ethics within their company and business in general. The study examined their views on the relationship between success and ethical conduct as well as the extent and nature of ethical conflicts experienced by the respondents. Some comparisons are made with similar studies that have been conducted in the past. Respondents have the most ethical conflicts with customers and employees, and with regard (...) to honesty in contracts/agreements. Most also believe that ethical standards are lower than they were 10 and 20 years ago, primarily because society's moral standards are lower. Additionally, they believe that the behavior of top management has the most influence on decisions in ethical situations. Finally, consistent with prior studies, they believe that they have the most responsibility to customers, ahead of employees and stockholders. (shrink)

Taking advantage of economic opportunities has led to numerous conflicts between society and business in various geographies of the world. Companies have developed social responsibility programs to prevent and manage these types of problems. However, some authors comment that these programs lack a strategic vision. Starting with the Working with People model, created for the field of rural development planning, this paper proposes a methodology to prevent the generation of social conflicts from business strategy: the territorial dimension. Background Biomedical and ethnographic studies among indigenous people are common practice in health and geographical research. Prior health research misconduct has been documented, particularly when obtaining genetic material. The objective of this study was to crossmatch previously published data with the perceptions of the Waorani peoples about the trading of their genetic material and other biological samples. Methods We conducted a mixed methods study design using a tailored 15-item questionnaire in 72 participants and in-depth interviews in 55 participants belonging to (...) 20 Waorani communities about their experiences and perceptions of participating in biomedical research projects. Additionally, we conducted a systematic review of the literature in order to crossmatch the published results of studies stating the approval of an ethics committee and individual consent within their work. Results A total of 40 men and 32 women, with a mean age of 57 ± 15 years agreed to be interviewed for inclusion. Five main categories around the violation of good clinical practices were identified, concerning the obtention of blood samples from a recently contacted Waorani native community within the Amazonian region of Ecuador. These themes are related to the lack of adequate communication between community members and researchers as well as the voluntariness to participate in health research. Additionally, over 40 years, a total of 38 manuscripts related to the use of biological samples in Waorani indigenous people were published. The majority of the studies did not state within their article obtaining research ethics board approval, and 71% did not report obtaining the informed consent of the participants prior to the execution of the project. Conclusion Clinical Research on the Waorani community in the Ecuadorian Amazon basin has been performed on several occasions. Unfortunately, the majority of these projects did not follow the appropriate ethical and professional standards in either reporting the results or fulfilling them. The results of our investigation suggest that biological material, including genetic material, has been used by researchers globally, with some omitting the minimum information required to guarantee transparency and good clinical practices. We highlight the importance of stating ethics within research to avoid breaches in research transparency. (shrink)

The Continuous Parameter Estimation Model is applied to develop individual genomic-level heritabilities for the latent hierarchical structure and developmental dynamics of Life History (LH) strategy LH strategies relate to the allocations of bioenergetic resources into different domains of fitness. LH has moderate to high population-level heritability in humans, both at the level of the high-order Super-K Factor and the lower-order factors, the K-Factor, Covitality Factor, and General Factor of Personality (GFP). Several important questions remain unexplored. We developed measures of genome-level (...) heritabilities employing an American sample of 316 monozygotic (MZ) and 274 dizygotic (DZ) twin dyads and a Swedish sample of 863 MZ and 475 DZ twin dyads. This novel heritability index measures individual genetic transmissibility, therefore opening new avenues for analyzing complex interactions among heritable traits inaccessible to standard structural equations methods. For these samples: (1) moderate to high heritability of factor loadings of Super-K on its lower-order factors is demonstrated, evidencing biological preparedness, genetic accommodation, and the gene-culture coevolution of biased epigenetic rules of development; (2) moderate to high heritability of the magnitudes of the effect of the higher-order factors upon their loadings on their constituent factors, evidencing genetic constraints upon phenotypic plasticity; and (3) that heritability of the LH factors, of factor loadings, and of the magnitudes of the correlations among factors are weaker among those with slower LH speeds, demonstrating that inter-individual variation in transmissibility is a function of individual socioecological selection pressures. Abstrak: Apakah truisme kosmos noētos - kosmos aisthētos (dunia idea - dunia inderawi) yang amat populer dalam filsafat Platon benar-benar otentik atau sebuah anakronisme? Tulisan ini hendak menunjukkan bahwa truisme tersebut tidak tepat. Untuk membuktikan argumen ini, penulis akan mengidentifikasi genesis dan dinamika historis berkenaan dengan anakronisme, yakni bahwa kosmos noētos - kosmos aisthētos bukan berasal dari filsafat Platon, melainkan kreasi inovatif Philon dari Alexandria dan Plotinos dalam rangka justifikasi filsafat mereka. Dengan demikian, meskipun tafsir Philon dan terutama Plotinos kemudian (...) mendominasi ‘cara-baca’ filsafat Platon nyaris sepanjang studi Platonisme, ‘cara-baca’ ini tidak identik dengan filsafat Platon yang menempatkan topos noētos - topos horatos (kawasan inteligibel - kawasan terlihat) dalam hubungan dengan kosmos yang satu dalam rangka merealisasikan paideia seturut tarikan Yang Baik. Kata-kata Kunci: Hipostasis, idea, Intelek, Jiwa, topos noētos - topos horatos, Yang Esa. Abstract: Is the popular truism in the philosophy of Plato, kosmos noētos - kosmos aisthētos (the intelligible world - the visible/sensible world), really authentic or an anachronism? This article aims to prove that this truism is incorrect. For this argument, the author will attempt to identify the genesis and historical dynamics with respect to an anachronism, namely, that the kosmos noētos - kosmos aisthētos was not derived from the philosophy of Platon but rather innovative creation of Philon of Alexandria and Plotinos in order to justify their philosophy. Thus, though the interpretation of Philon and especially that of Plotinos has dominated the interpretation of Plato’s philosophy in almost all studies of Platonism, this way of thinking is not identical with the philosophy of Plato that puts topos noētos - horatos topos (the intelligible region - the visible region) in connection with a single kosmos in order to realize the paideia according to the Good. Dalam pembacaan saya, karya yang sedang saya timang-timang ini tidak berlebihan jika diberi tajuk, “Belajar Mencipta Refleksi Ilmiah Teologis dari Joas Adiprasetya.” Oleh karena itu, pada tempat pertama, kepada Joas Adiprasetya saya menyampaikan proficiat atas dipublikasikannya hasil studi yang memahkotai ikhtiar menimba ilmu di School of Theology, Boston University, Massachusetts (USA), pada 2009 yang lalu. Studi formal Joas Adiprasetya bukan hanya sekedar selesai asal selesai, melainkan dengan kualifikasi maxima cum laude. Hal ini dapat ditilik dan dibuktikan dengan opus magnum yang (...) sedang kita bicarakan hic et nunc. Bagaimana tidak? Karya ini mengangkat ke permukaan dua tema besar, yang kemudian dijadikan fokus kajian dan perhatiannya. Kedua tema itu berkenaan dengan Trinitas dan Teologi Agama-Agama. Di satu pihak, mengulas Trinitas tak ubahnya bagaikan mengawali perjalanan dalam kegelapan dan mengakhirinya dalam kegelapan. Pembicaraan tentang Trinitas mengesankan tidak semakin memperjelas pemahaman pembicara tentang Trinitas, apalagi memperjelas Trinitas pada dirinya sendiri. Trinitas tetap Trinitas. Titik. Ia tetap misteri. Di lain pihak, manusia yang percaya telah (sedang dan akan) mengalami siapakah Trinitas dalam peri hidupnya. Jadi, ada semacam lubang yang memungkinkan manusia dalam keterbatasannya scapato via (lepas, melejit, melarikan diri) mencapai gugus tertinggi dalam puncak-puncak sekelebatan sinar yang barang kali imaginatif. Akan tetapi kedua “kebenaran” itu sah. Artinya, dapat diverifikasikan dan dapat pula dipertanggungjawabkan secara ilmiah. Oleh karena itu, sangat besar kekeliruan UU No. 12 Tahun 2012 tentang Pendidikan Tinggi yang membuat kategorisasi baru, yang sangat bertentangan dengan akal sehat dan kebiasaan ilmiah, yakni memasukkan (ilmu) Teologi dalam rumpun ilmu Agama. Namun, apa mau dikata, para pengambil kebijakan di negeri ini akhir-akhir ini seakan tidak pernah belajar dari ilmu, kecuali bagaimana mengakali agar kepentingan kelompok diakomodasi dengan imbalan uang. Justru, studi dan karya Joas Adiprasetya ini, di mata saya, dapat memperlihatkan kekeliruan dan kerancuan berpikir para anggota parlemen sekaligus Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia. Coba simak saja kajian Joas Adiprasetya dan lihat sendiri bagaimana tema teologis ini tidak bersangkut paut dengan “rumpun ilmu agama,” sebab studi ini bersifat keilmuan, “metapraksis” yang melampaui premis-premis agama sebagai suatu lembaga, yang tentu saja telah dibuktikan di Indonesia dapat dipolitisasi. Dalam studi Joas Adiprasetya ini, tak terbilang jumlah tokoh besar (dalam sejarah doktrin Kristen) yang mengulas, merefleksikan, meneliti, serta menulis dengan ketelitian yang mengagumkan dan ketajaman yang memukau, akan tetapi pada akhirnya sama gelapnya, dan yang lebih menakjubkan adalah jumlah orang percaya dan oleh karena itu mengalami tidak berkurang, bahkan sebaliknya. Itulah sebabnya Anselmus Canterburry menyatakan Credo ut intelligam; artinya, saya percaya supaya dengan itulah saya memahami............ Joas Adiprasetya pun, dalam bidikan saya, menyenggol paradigma teologi tentang agama-agama di bawah istilah eksklusivisme, inklusivisme, and pluralisme. Seiring dengan perkembangan waktu, yang memperlihatkan bahwa teologi pun menganut asas semper reformanda et reformata sicut signum temporis (senantiasa membarui dan diperbarui seturut tanda zaman), maka dipopulerkan era pasca pluralisme. Dengan terminologi pasca pluralisme, sejumlah peristilahan yang pernah dikecam seperti sinkretisme, kafir (baca: bukan kita), murtad, proselitisme, dan lain sebagainya perlu ditinjau kembali. Di sini, Joas Adiprasetya melihat tersedianya lahan untuk berdialog, juga tentang Trinitas. Tentu hal ini merupakan tantangan tersendiri jika “minoritas”—seperti Joas Adiprasetya—menawarkan kepada publik sebuah keterkaitan “niscaya” antara teologi tentang Trinitas dengan teologi tentang agama-agama. Ternyata Joas Adiprasetya yang kreatif berhasil menyingkapkan kata kunci yang dapat berlaku umum, yaitu sosial untuk kemudian masuk dalam the great design, yakni misteri perichoresis. Tidak tanggung-tanggung, Joas Adiprasetya menyihir para pembaca dengan ungkapan magis yang diturunkan dari Leonardo Boff, “The holy Trinity is our social program” (Nicolas Federov dikutip oleh Boff dalam “Trinity” dalam Systematic Theology: Perspectives from Liberation Theology, hlm. 78). Meski demikian, hal itu tidak berarti Saudara Joas Adiprasetya sedang tidak menyimpan bom waktu, sebab relasi sosial yang diterapkan dalam signifikansi perichoresis dapat melahirkan suatu cara pandang yang menyamakan saja antara Sang Alpha dan Omega dengan makhluk ciptaan; dan hal ini salah satu butir notasi tentang Teologi Pembebasan, yang sepenuhnya didukung oleh Leonardo Boff. Sekali lagi, dengan memanfaatkan senjata pamungkas dari para teolog kenamaan tersebut (Raimundo Panikkar, Gavin D’Costa, Mark Heim, yang masing-masing menggunakan person-, nature-, reality-perichoresis), Joas Adiprasetya berhasil mengeksplorasi dan menemukan seberkas cahaya terang, yang ternyata sejalan dengan penemuan Richard Kearney (Allah yang mungkin ada) dan Jürgen Moltmann (Trinitas terbuka). Sampai di sini, Joas Adiprasetya dapat menawarkan temuannya sebagai suatu bentuk teologi Indonesia! Akhirnya, karya ini tidak sesederhana, tidak sesingkat Daftar Isi (hlm. vii), sebab penelusuran Joas Adiprasetya mengalir sampai jauh, sampai saling merasuki pribadi-pribadi tanpa melebur menjadi satu, tanpa menghilangkan identitas, justru karena prinsip perichoretik itu bersatu tanpa saling meniadakan. Karya Ketua Sekolah Tinggi Teologia Jakarta ini merupakan salah satu model unggul berteologi dalam konteks dan ranah multipluralisme, yang diakui dan dipuji di Indonesia, namun tidak banyak dipraktikkan. Leonhard Swidler, guru besar teologi Katolik di Universitas Temple di Philadephia dan pendiri Institute for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, termasuk teolog Katolik Amerika Serikat sangat terkenal. Delapan tahun lalu ia menerbitkan buku yang pantas diperhatikan. Judulnya saja mengagetkan: Jesus was a Feminist. Namun kita tidak perlu berprasangka. Buku ini bukan salah satu dari pelbagai tulisan ideologis. Yang dimaksud Swidler dengan feminis Yesus seorang feminis sangat radikal (h. 33) adalah bahwa Yesus vigorously promoted the dignity and equality of women in the (...) midst of a very male-dominated society (ibid.). Swilder juga menyebut Yesus androgynous karena dalam kepribadiannya terdapat fusion and balance of so-called masculine and feminine psychological traits (h. 34). Seni Swidler adalah bahwa ia mengajak kita bersama membaca keempat injil dan, itulah kehebatannya, kita dibuat Swidler melihat sesuatu yang sebetulnya selalu kita baca, tetapi sekurang-kurangnya oleh penulis ini tidak diperhatikan (Swidler kadang-kadang sedikit menjemukan, karena ia membahas semua teks satu-satu dalam empat injil di mana perempuan muncul sehingga pengulangan tidak dapat dihindari). Swidler menunjukkan betapa tegas Yesus berdiri di pihak para perempuan, dan bahwa itu merupakan kontras keras terhadap sikap dalam lingkungan bangsa Yahudi, lingkungan Yesus sendiri, yang patriarkal. Feminisme Yesus menjadi mencolok karena sikap-sikap Yesus terhadap kaum perempuan berlawanan total dengan kebiasaan dan pandangan budaya Yahudi zaman itu, dan khususnya juga dengan sikap resmi pustaka Rabinistik. Suatu contoh ada di Lukas 36 50 (wanita pendosa yang mencuci kaki Yesus dengan tetes tangisannya): Ada Yesus yang begitu peka terhadap curahan hati perempuan itu dan ada sikap tak mengerti, bahkan tersinggung tamu-tamu lain. Dalam agama Yahudi jelas dan eksplisit perempuan diberi peran sekunder terhadap laki-laki, perempuan harus taat pada suami, ia tidak dapat menjadi saksi, dalam sinagoga ia harus diam. Atas latar belakang itu sikap Yesus terhadap perempuan, dan sikap keempat penginjil terhadap semua perempuan yang muncul, amat kontras.... Tulisan Swidler betul-betul sebuah pembuka mata. Artinya, sesuatu yang selama ini sudah selalu dibaca dalam injil, tetapi tidak diperhatikan, mendadak menjadi mencolok dan ternyata penting. Orang akan membaca Injil dengan mata baru. Ia menyadari suatu dimensi yang dalam seluruh ajaran dan spiritualitas Gereja tidak pernah diberi perhatian. Kesadaran akan patriarkat serta tuntutan agar harkat kemanusiaan perempuan diakui, sesuatu yang sejak pertengahan abad lalu diperjuangkan oleh feminisme, lahir dari luar Gereja. Justru karena itu keyakinan Swidler bahwa pengembalian martabat perempuan merupakan unsur amat penting dalam kabar gembira Yesus adalah begitu penting. Orang tidak perlu sependapat dengan Swidler dalam semua hal, tetapi penegasan bahwa bagi Yesus pengakuan terhadap martabat perempuan yang tak kalah dengan martabat laki-laki merupakan tantangan yang wajib diperhatikan oleh setiap teolog. Sudah waktunya bahwa hampir 2000 tahun kebutaan Gereja terhadap dimensi feminis dalam pewartaan Yesus diakhiri. Sebagai catatan akhir: Swidler tidak memasuki pertanyaan ten-tang apakah Gereja berhak menahbiskan perempuan menjadi imam dan uskup. Tetapi ia menyinggungnya. Menurutnya implikasi dari sikap Yesus terhadap perempuan maupun cerminan sikap itu dalam tulisan empat penginjil adalah bahwa penolakan terhadap penahbisan perem-puan tidak dapat mendasarkan diri pada suatu ajaran Yesus. Alasan mengapa masalah imamat perempuan tidak muncul lebih jelas dalam Perjanjian Baru adalah bahwa tatanan hirarkis pimpinan Gereja menurut slagorde uskup, imam dan diakon baru menjadi baku sejak akhir abad ke-2 dan pada waktu itu nada feminis maklumat Yesus sudah tenggelam dalam prasangka budaya patriarkal umat Kristiani.
